The straps have soft padding underneath to protect the paint. There were no scratches on my tank when I sold the bike. I recommend you find a used Big Mak.
The Twisted Throttle site will have several options for your RT. However, you will need the ring that attaches to the gas cap, and by the time you add the cost all up, you may be in stock BMW replacement territory.
If you are able to find a Big Mak bag and use it; be careful of the bag coming down on the hinged gas cap when fueling, it'll snap the cap in half quick. It doesn't take much to break that casting at the hinged point. You can also use other bags on a Big Mak mount. Just snap the magnet 'wings' together and they form the channel that the Mak mount slides into. The way the mount tilts up to allow fueling is just superb. I still use my old faded Big Mak bag because of the pear shape that is narrowest at the front of the bag I've also found the bag to be amazingly waterproof since losing my rain cover a couple of years ago.
I keep camera, phone, in baggies but nothing has gotten wet inside the bag despite many hours in the rain. There are locations on the front and rear of the tank that the straps can attach to without modification.

Tankbag attachment point under the seat. Tankbag attachment point at the front. I like it overall as it has the mounting plate attached to the gas cap, so the bag doesn't touch the tank physically.
What I don't like is that full left handlebar turns are out of the question as the left side portion of the bag hits the horn switch. If I was getting a new big I would go for slimmer and taller, like the stocker. I bought a Marsee for my 03 RRT and wanted a second set of mounting straps for a second bike.
The best they could do was offer to sell me a second bag!! Run like Hell away from them!! RKA stands behind their products. I have one on another bike. Decision is Close Thanks, everyone, for the input. I am leaning toward the Wunderlich, even though it is pricey.
I like the size and expandability, as well as the bike-specific mounting pad that wouldn't necessitate trying to remove aging bolts and maybe breaking one off.
Marsee claims they have a 20 liter, but it doesn't show on the website. Their bag strikes me as a plastic box, and the clear cover is nuts--just inviting thefts. RKA is still in the running, and I agree with the assessment of their customer service.
